Nuclear Power

Nuclear power makes up a significant segment of plannable power in the Swedish electricity system. To utilise nuclear power for electricity production results in low emissions of carbon dioxide, however Swedish nuclear facilities are aging and need to remain safe operation for several years to come.

In Sweden today there are six active reactors that require cost-effective solutions for life-time extension, and safe maintenance and operation to maintain their contribution to plannable electricity production until they are decommissioned.

The research and development managed by Energiforsk revolves around questions concerning aging, strength and durability tests, and enabling of safe control of operational status at facilities. The necessary goal is always to ensure safe operation of current facilities for at least another 20 years.

Energiforsk is constantly monitoring developments in the nuclear power field to be able to answer questions on the future role and possibilities for nuclear power in Sweden and the Nordics.
